
Chief Maureen Luggi
Maureen Luggi is of Gitxsan, Wet’suwet’en and Stellat’en ancestry and is a proud member of the Bear Clan (Gitdimden) of the House of Spoax (Spookw / Spoxh). Maureen has been elected to multiple terms as Chief of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation, serving from 1987 to 2007, and re-election in 2019, 2022 and in 2025 by way of acclamation, for a further three-year term.
Chief Luggi has over 35 years of experience working and volunteering with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, companies and non-profit organizations, including the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, BC Assembly of First Nations, BC First Nations Gaming Revenue Society, Carrier Sekani Family Services Chief’s Committee on Children & Families, K’uul Power, Burns Lake Native Development Corporation and Burns Lake Native Logging Ltd, Prince George Nechako Aboriginal Employment and Training Association and the Lheidli T’enneh Treaty Office.
Nominated by the Assembly of First Nations, Chief Luggi was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal, a national honour, on June 20, 2025, for her public service and long-held leadership roles in Indigenous governance.
Her skills include leadership, governance and administration, management, community consultation and engagement, and treaty negotiations. Chief Luggi is passionate about her community and feels a deep sense of responsibility to ensure that all community members have a voice that must be heard.
Chief Luggi is a recent graduate of the Indigenous Business Leadership Executive MBA program at the Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University, where she also completed the Public Relations Certificate Program in 2019. She also studied at the University of Victoria and holds a Certificate in Administration of Aboriginal Governments. She completed the Justice Institute of British Columbia Conflict Resolution and First Nations Skills Certificate courses and has been certified by Erickson Coaching International in Expanded Emotional Intelligence, the Art and Science of Coaching and Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner & Master Practitioner.
