The Indigenous Justice Worker provides support to community members involved in the court system. This position focuses on providing personalized support to Indigenous individuals through one-on-one services for community members referred for diversion by community leaders, police, or the courts. This role ensures clients receive culturally appropriate assistance, guiding them through legal proceedings while advocating for their rights and well-being.
Duties
- Arranging for culturally appropriate supports for Indigenous accused persons, victims or offenders, including access to Elders
- Determining which clients are eligible for this alternate approach to sentencing and consulting with these clients as to which sentencing system, they want to take part in
- Accompany clients to court, providing emotional support and explaining the legal process in a culturally sensitive way.
- Advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous cultural practices and ensure cultural needs are respected during court proceedings.
- Assisting clients in determining what additional support is needed, such as housing, health, social assistance and education, and contacting agencies or government departments who provide the
needed support - Act as a liaison between clients and the legal system, ensuring fair treatment and understanding of cultural challenges.
- Educate clients about their legal rights and empower them to make informed decisions.
- Facilitation of diversion and Justice circles
- Work with community organizations and stakeholders to strengthen support for clients.
- Maintaining client files documenting the offence, other pertinent information, and the client’s diversion plans and progress.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and historic and current forms of colonialism, systemic discrimination, and barriers facing Aboriginal communities.
- Experience in a support or advocacy role, preferably with Indigenous communities or in the justice systems.
- Ability to articulate criminal and social justice issues; Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Self-motivated individual with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team; Excellent decision-making and problem
